Environmental Impact: Reinforce a Culture of Continuous Learning with These Key Elements

Fostering a robust professional learning culture in schools is vital for attracting and retaining high-caliber talent. Education leaders are looking for guidance on how to establish and sustain an environment that fosters continuous learning. Based on their experience in helping educators design and implement professional learning systems, the authors have come to understand the elements that reflect and reinforce a culture of continuous learning and how schools can bring about that type of environment. Many factors must be present if a school is to have an environment that promotes continuous learning. This article details a list of those factors that is informed by the authors' experience working with dozens of schools as well as interviews with teachers, coaches, and principals. They include: (1) Focus; (2) Results Orientation; (3) Self-Reflection; (4) Grounding in Multiple forms of Data; (5) Dedicated Time; (6) Collaboration; (7) Trust; (8) Agency; and (9) Actionable Advice and Feedback. The article also provides advice for creating and sustaining a strong culture of continuous learning, and addressing the human element to ensure that a school's system of professional learning is remains robust.
