Law in Translation: Challenges and Opportunities in Teaching International Students in Business Law and Legal Environment Courses

The purpose of this article is to outline the unique challenges faced by international students enrolled in business law or legal environment of business courses. It is also imperative to recognize the numerous opportunities that instructors can create in business law classrooms that will enhance the experience of all students given the increasingly global nature of society. Finally, this article provides recommendations to assist instructors in creating an atmosphere that promotes understanding and success for international students in business law classrooms. Part II describes the monumental demographic and other changes within higher education in the last quarter century as they relate to international students. Part III.A briefly reviews the literature on issues relating to teaching international students that are common across all disciplines in a university setting. Part III.B describes the unique challenges that business law and legal environment of business courses pose, including language barriers, foundational knowledge, and discrepancy with U.S. students. Part IV.A explores how the presence of international students creates opportunities for learning with a focus on international and global issues. In Part IV.B, the authors offer recommendations and suggest additional resources for ensuring a quality experience for both international and U.S. students. Section V concludes the article.
