Being Better and Doing Better: Men's Health and Mental Health on Campus
Kilmartin, Christopher
About Campus, v22 n2 p12-20 May-Jun 2017
This article was written by Christopher Kilmartin to share some of what he has learned in his career as Emeritus college professor, author, actor, playwright, consultant, and professional psychologist about the needs of campus males and what is believed to work when addressing and intervening to keep men from hurting themselves and others. Kilmartin writes that we would do well to take a gender-aware approach to addressing these issues. Although men are often studied as political and social actors, men are rarely studied as behaving according to their conformity and/or resistance to masculine norms. For example, we know that nearly all US mass shootings are committed by men. While it is without doubt that these people have problems with mental illness and are victims of child maltreatment, a gender-aware approach would include an analysis of how they thought, felt, and acted based on what they believed to be appropriate for men. In the modern world, men and women have more common ground, therefore college men need to learn that they will likely need to modify their gender expectations to get along in the future. Providing an atmosphere in which students can understand the cultural pressure to perform antiquated gender roles is completely within one of the central missions of higher education: to build thoughtful individuals who are self-aware and ready to take their places as productive citizens.
