Extending Student Knowledge and Interest through Super-Curricular Activities
Physics Education, v53 n2 Article 025001 Mar 2018
Any teacher of physics is likely to consider super-curricular reading as an important strategy for successful students. However, there are many more ways to extend a student's interest in a subject than reading books, and undirected reading (such as providing a long out of date reading list) is not likely to be as helpful as targeted or directed study. I present an approach to directing and supporting additional study pioneered at St Paul's School in the last 2 years based on two significant steps: (1) Providing a large, searchable database of reading and other material such as podcasts rather than simply a reading list; and (2) Encouraging students to visualise and plot their trajectory toward a specific goal using a graph.
