Keeping It in the Family: Bridging the Home-School Gap with Science
Dakin, Sally
Primary Science, n150 p32-35 Nov 2017
Hempshill Hall Primary School is an urban school in Nottingham (U.K.), with almost 500 pupils. It is situated in a low-income area in the country, yet attracts many families from outside its school borders. It offers a broad curriculum that aims to be very child-led and engaging. However, it struggles to reach some of its less-engaged parents and involve them in their children's education. The school has tried many different routes to increase engagement and feels that the link with science has been particularly successful. In this article, the author, a headteacher at the school, discusses how increased parental engagement was achieved through its science curriculum.
