Implementing Universal Design: A Collaborative Approach to Designing Campus Housing

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-Whitewater) is committed to a mission that includes serving students with disabilities beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities act (ADA). To that end, UW-Whitewater has tried to integrate universal Design (UD) principles into multiple facets of campus life. While the integration of UD principles in building design is a goal among several schools, there are no specific standards for what that means in practice. In 2006, UW-Whitewater entered into a collaborative dialogue to integrate UD principles in the building of a new residence hall. The Department of Residence Life and the Center for Students with Disabilities collaborated in this partnership not just to look at minimum federal requirements but to create full integration and functionality of the space for students with different needs. The team looked beyond physical access and included sensory elements (vision and hearing), learning, and social access and integration into the design. The outcome is one of the most recognized, universally designed, and green buildings in the state of Wisconsin and among student housing facilities nationally. This article will explore a brief history of UD, how UD was applied at UW-Whitewater, how university goals were prioritized, the implementation of UD, and the lessons learned.
