Storymaking: Combining Making and Storytelling in a School Makerspace
Bull, Glen; Schmidt-Crawford, Denise A.; McKenna, Michael C.; Cohoon, Jim
Theory Into Practice, v56 n4 p271-281 2017
"Storymaking" makes use of school makerspaces to combine making and storytelling. Constructing a diorama is a common storytelling activity in schools. This exploratory study describes preliminary efforts that explored the feasibility of extending "Make to Learn" activities with elementary and middle school students from two schools, Hollymead Elementary and Buford Middle School, in Virginia. Students participating in the project combined making and storytelling through creation of animated dioramas. This preliminary investigation focused primarily on the mechanical aspects and technical feasibility of implementing a makerspace activity of this kind with elementary and middle school students. The results were sufficiently promising to warrant development of further scaffolding to support implementation in the elementary and middle school grades. The small number of participating students precludes conclusions regarding generalization to other settings at this time. The Storymaking project is now further described as a makerspace project focused on engineering design and storytelling. A brief history of the maker movement is provided to contextualize these efforts focused on making and storytelling.
