Early childhood, defined as infancy through age 5 years, is a critical period and serves as the foundation for development throughout the life span. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in July 2015, there were almost 20 million children ages birth to 5 years. The physical health of infants and young children is addressed and monitored through multiple mechanisms, including prevalence rates for specific diseases and immunization rates. While empirical evidence regarding the many physical health needs of young children is paramount, the question becomes what about the mental health needs of young children? Infants and young children have a demonstrated need for early childhood mental health supports. Without these supports, they can experience significant short- and long-term negative consequences. The good news is that there are low-cost, evidence-based interventions that can be adopted to help meet these needs. This article discusses these no- or low-cost supports for early childhood mental health that can easily be implemented by school psychologists.
