Wilhelm Von Humboldt, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and José Ortega y Gasset: Some Thoughts on Character Education for Today's University
Bara, Francisco Esteban
Journal of Character Education, v11 n1 p1-20 2015
In recent years university education has undergone considerable change. In short, it appears to have adapted to the prevailing circumstances and it is even proving to be an essential resource in the optimization of professional, social, cultural, and economic concerns. All in all, the changes it has gone through have led to the achievement of quite significant results. However, at the same time we have also witnessed the emergence of certain misgivings about the nature of this education, above all with regard to the role it plays in character education. This article undertakes a specific examination of this role, and in so doing it revisits a past in which essential philosophical ideas were being formulated about higher education. These ideas placed the education of the character at the heart of university education, and despite initial appearances, they can be readily accommodated within today's universities.
