Preparing Physical and Health Education Teacher Candidates to Create a Culture of Wellness in Schools: New Curriculum, New Message
Brewer, Hannah J.; Nichols, Randall; Leight, Joanne M.; Clark, Gary E.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v88 n9 p14-20 2017
We live in a dynamic educational world. Physical and health education teacher preparation programs must examine what society needs and consider a new model for teacher preparation that is based on inspiring youth to build healthy behaviors that last a lifetime. One university created a new School Wellness Education (SWE) program that prepares physical and health education teachers to also serve as school wellness educators. This includes being a champion for school-to-community wellness and using the Whole Child model to create a culture of wellness within schools that reaches all layers of the communities in which students live, work and play. This article describes the various elements of the program curriculum. The purpose of the SWE program is to prepare teachers who will cultivate a holistic approach to wellness in schools that allows the vision of 50 Million Strong to extend beyond 2029 and ensure that schoolchildren of both this generation and of future generations will live healthy and active lives.
