Creating Good Problems: Redesigning High School for College Success
Domers, Ted
Phi Delta Kappan, v99 n3 p25-29 Nov 2017
At most high schools, the goal is to prepare students to make the leap to a college environment. By contrast, Philadelphia's G.W. Carver High School of Engineering and Science has decided to create an environment that mirrors the culture and expectations of college so the transition to college won't seem like a leap at all. Three changes have been most critical: giving students more choice in their course of study, ensuring greater equity in access to high-level classes and electives, and slowing down the typically frenetic pace of high school to give students more time to focus.
