Institutions of higher education across the country serve military-connected learners in two primary ways. First, they provide programs for undergraduate and graduate military-connected postsecondary students. In addition, higher education is the primary professional development avenue for teachers, social workers, counselors, and others who serve pre-K-12 military-connected students and their families. They also provide graduate education in programs for adult learners in formal and informal settings. Research indicates that education personnel may need greater understanding and skills in addressing the personal, academic, social, and career domains of military students (RAND, 2013 ). When military culture and lifestyle are better understood by educators at all levels, strategies can be developed to support the learning of military-connected learners. Feedback from and conversations with military-connected students indicate there is a need for faculty and staff to receive additional training to understand and be sensitive to their unique needs and experiences (Moon & Schma, 2011). The Military-Connected Learner Community of Practice, initiated at Kansas State University, addresses these issues and provides ongoing awareness and support for military-connected learners.
