Sustaining the Essence: Community Values, Knowledges, and Ways of Being
Haynes Writer, Jeanette
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v53 n4 p168-173 2017
Values, knowledges, and ways of being are the essences and cultural imperatives for tribal nation students and communities, and they sustain the tribal nations' continuance as distinct Peoples. After discussing historical and ongoing colonialist oppression, the author urges educators to form partnerships with communities to foster students' academic achievement and support their citizenship in their tribal communities through a culturally relevant and appropriate education.
