Effective Strategies for Teaching Evolution: The Primary Evolution Project
Hatcher, Chris
Primary Science, n138 p25-26 May 2015
When Chris Hatcher joined the Primary Evolution Project team at the University of Reading, his goal was to find effective strategies to teach evolution in a way that keeps children engaged and enthused. Hatcher has collaborated with colleagues at the University's Institute of Education to break the evolution unit down into distinct topics and devise stimulating activities that meet the year 6 (10-11-year-old students) primary science curriculum requirements in England. Herein, he discusses ways to introduce students to key evolutionary ideas (time scale, fossils, adaptations) and natural selection.
