Primary Science at the Discovery Corner
Nagel, Bert
Primary Science, n139 p30-32 Sep 2015
Imagine 98% of children in your country leaving primary school without ever having done a science investigation. This almost complete absence of primary science is the situation just over the North Sea from Britain--in the Netherlands. A recent survey showed that only about 120 primary schools in the Netherlands, out of a total of 6000, do some "technology" (what the Dutch call science) on a regular basis, and then mostly with 11- to 12-year-olds, who are at the end of their primary education. This article introduces the Discovery Corner, founded in an effort to combat the lack of science for young children, Discovery Corner ("Ontdekhoek"), was started in 1986 to offer primary children science activities and experiences, and now about 70,000 visitors attend each year. It is based at four sites, including Amsterdam and Rotterdam, chosen to be as close to young visitors as possible. After initial donations, it has had to rely almost completely on entrance fees to keep going. Discovery Corner aims to inspire children to have a lifelong interest in science.
