Saturday Morning Science
Kirkland, John
Primary Science, n143 p17-18 May 2016
Parental engagement is an area of school life that school leaders often aspire to increase, but it can be a challenge. This is especially so when trying to attract parents whose engagement is already low or absent. Science presents opportunities for engagement from which other subjects may not benefit. The collaborative nature of science and the chance for parents and children to investigate the unknown, not to mention the fun and smiles that the pops and bangs of a science experiment can produce, can attract the attention and interest of a wider and more diverse section of the parent and school body. In this article, John Kirkland shares how he brings science into the family with his "Dads and Kids Saturday Science" mornings at Manor Primary School in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
