Documenting the Engineering Design Process
Hollers, Brent
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v77 n2 p35-39 Oct 2017
Documentation of ideas and the engineering design process is a critical, daily component of a professional engineer's job. While patent protection is often cited as the primary rationale for documentation, it can also benefit the engineer, the team, company, and stakeholders through creating a more rigorously designed and purposeful solution. Through the process of documentation, reflection, redesign, and new innovation can occur. Communication with other team members allows for a more coherent design process. Designs and schematics allow CAD and other designers to develop better prototypes and designs. Finally, communication of solutions and ideas to stakeholders is critical for project continuation and funding. These are just a few reasons why there is such an emphasis on the engineering design process and its documentation in technology and engineering curriculum as well as extracurricular programs like competition robotics.
