Commentary: Race Man and Philosopher of Education--A Reflection on W.E.B. Du Bois
Gordon, Edmund W.; Watkins, L'Tanya M.
American Educational Research Journal, v54 n1 suppl p48S-52S Apr 2017
The brilliantly developed emphasis in the work of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois on race and the political economy has led many of his readers to misunderstand and underestimate his additional important contributions to and perspectives on education. In addition, some of his work not commonly read by educators as well as his unpublished musings from later life may have left some of his most profound thinking concerning pedagogy less broadly available. One of the authors of this commentary claims to have had access to Du Bosian resources and to have enjoyed a privileged perspective based on extended personal exchanges with him as well as having read just about everything that Du Bois has published. In this article, the authors share their opinions and reflect on W.E.B. Du Bois, Race Man and Philosopher of Education. [This article is a commentary on Clayton Pierce's "W.E.B. Du Bois and Caste Education: Racial Capitalist Schooling from Reconstruction to Jim Crow," v54 n1 suppl p23S-47S," Apr 2017 (EJ1155434).]
