Unlocking Learning Using Tony Ryan's "Thinker's Keys"
Robinson, Linda
Primary Science, n146 p25-28 Jan 2017
The learning of science keeps evolving, just like the subject of science itself. With this in mind, teachers know the importance of keeping up to date and researching different ways of providing a rich learning experience for children. Teachers are developing not only children's learning, but how they progress as learners. This is where Tony Ryan's "Thinker's Keys for Kids" (Ryan, 1990) are put into practice with the junior children at Tanglin Trust School in Singapore. By adopting these ideas, teacehrs are emphasising a focus on the development of the children's innovative and creative thinking and, most importantly, unlocking their analytical, critical and creative thinking abilities. Thinker's Keys are a set of twenty different activities designed to engage and inspire learners in a range of thinking tasks. In this article, the author explains how Tony Ryan's "Thinker's Keys" support the development of innovative and creative thinking in her school.
