An Examination of the Feasibility of Integrating Motivational Interviewing Techniques into FCS Cooperative Extension Programming
Radunovich, Heidi Liss; Ellis, Sarah; Spangler, Taylor
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v109 n3 p31-36 Sum 2017
Demonstrating program impact through behavior change is critical for the continued success of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Cooperative Extension programming. However, the literature suggests that simply providing information to participants does not necessarily lead to behavior change. This study pilot tested the integration of Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques into an existing FCS Master Money Mentor program. Participants reported knowledge gain, confidence, and a willingness to use their skills, and, at 6-month follow-up they reported positive experiences with using MI in their programming. MI has the potential to be used within FCS in order to increase the likelihood of participant behavior change.
