Impact of a Rural Community-Based Event for Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Doody, Kathy Ralabate; Patti, Angela L.
Rural Special Education Quarterly, v36 n3 p128-135 Sep 2017
Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) often have difficulty demonstrating appropriate communication, social skills, behavior, and sensory responses; thus, it can be challenging for families, particularly those in rural areas, to find suitable community-based opportunities. The Au-some Evenings program was developed at a local children's museum to provide an inclusive, age-appropriate, nonjudgmental recreational activity for families with children with ASD. The present study examined parent perceptions of the Au-some Evenings events. Results demonstrated high levels of parent satisfaction with the program. The authors include a discussion of the implications, limitations, and directions for future research and practice.
