Kracl, Carrie; Harshbarger, Dena
Science and Children, v54 n9 p78-82 Jul 2017
Preparing 21st century learners is the goal of both the "Common Core State Standards" ("CCSS") and the "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS"). These two sets of standards jointly illuminate the need to teach scientific and literacy skills that will more appropriately prepare elementary students to successfully participate in science education. One way to meet this challenge is through interdisciplinary instruction. Interdisciplinary instruction prepares students to meet the "CCSS" and "NGSS" by creating a specific purpose for developing and using literacy skills This column provides ideas and techniques to enhance science teaching. This month's issue shows how teachers can use literature and higher-level thinking questions to enhance science instruction.
