Drawing on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the author highlights the increasing diversity of family structures, roles, and trajectories. Teachers, he writes, need to be able to talk about "the family" without imposing a narrow definition of family structure. At the same time, teachers need to celebrate the common values that underlie family relationships.
