Enhancing Interactions with Children with Autism through Storybook Reading: A Caregiver's Guide
Zimmer, Kate
Young Exceptional Children, v20 n3 p133-144 Sep 2017
Positive results for children with ASD in the areas of language and communication skills have been shown through the use of storybook reading. Shared storybook reading promotes the growth of language and social participation, two core deficits for children with ASD. This article describes strategies that can be implemented to enhance interactions between caregiver and a child on the spectrum during story time. All strategies are evidence-based and, if put into practice, can lay the groundwork for important emergent literacy skills. Figure 1 provides a brief overview of the strategies.
