Comparing Native Hawaiian Education with Native American and African American Education during the Nineteenth Century

This chapter is a detailed investigation of education for Native Hawaiians during the 19th century. However, adhering to Ronald Takaki's assertion (2000) that it is important to demonstrate that America's racial policies involved common practices across culturally diverse groups, this paper incorporates prior studies on the education of African Americans (Anderson 1985; Beyer 2007; Watkins 2001) and Native Americans (Adams 1946; Almeida 1997; Armstrong 1885; Berkhofer 1965; Coleman 1985, 1993; Lindsey 1995; Parker 1989; Spring 1996, 1997) to compare with Native Hawaiians. There were two periods in which America's common racial policies were evident. During the first period, prior to the end of the American Civil War, educators sought to Christianize and "civilize" indigenous peoples in the United States and Hawai'i. After the Civil War, educators sought to infuse non-whites with industrial skills in order to provide them with a means to succeed in the economy. It was during this second period due to the founding of Hampton Institute that all three culturally diverse groups were introduced to an educational system that demonstrated America's racial policies involved common practices across racial groups. Besides making this connection, the purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the education during the nineteenth century for three culturally diverse groups.
