A Quality of Giftedness
Freeman, Joan
Gifted and Talented International, v27 n2 p13-18 2012
In this issue's lead article, Joan Freeman presents ideas which have emerged from her experiences in her long career of studying gifts and talents. She has been heavily involved in research and teaching, and has visited gifted educational provision all over the world. She has also spent a great deal of intimate time with gifted and talented people of all ages. What intrigued her with increasing force is something distinct and beyond any measures of gifts and talents devised to date. She terms this with the shorthand of "A Quality of Giftedness." It emerges through the context of academic research as well as via biographies and even novels, and through her interactions with the gifted themselves. There is something inherent, a quality which is separate and different from what is measureable. It can be enhanced, but it cannot be planted in just anyone.
