Pedagogy Corner: Spatial Counting
Lovitt, Charles
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v22 n2 p14-16 2017
This article describes how Charles Lovitt found a classroom activity in a resource book and by peering through a pedagogy lens, enhanced, tweaked, adapted, and extended the idea into a richer, healthier, well balanced classroom lesson. The task described in the article is often presented to students as a flash card for a limited time with the challenge "How many dots did you see in the pattern?". The pattern is then shown again while the class verifies how many dots there were. The conversation then turns to how students saw the patterns and the various ways of counting them. The teacher asks students to describe how they saw the pattern and the teacher summarizes this as a picture. Lovitt describes fives ways to tweak the activity to further enhance its value in the classroom.
