Joy, Grace and Transformation: The Pedagogy of Tutors in New Zealand's Alternative Education Centres

From working with tutors in New Zealand alternative education centres and through phenomenological poetic inquiry, the author of this article discusses approaches he found that re-engage disenfranchised young people in education. These approaches were not based upon knowledge tutors gained from teaching qualifications, but rather developed from life experiences that enabled tutors to enact teaching as a deeply human encounter. As a teacher, the author was challenged by tutors to relate more authentically with students: inviting joy into his teaching, operating with grace and looking holistically at achievement. Given increasing demands on secondary school teachers' workloads, Schoone believes it is timely to consider the role these alternative education tutors could have within conventional schools--providing pastoral support and academic guidance within and beyond school--to help students navigate the fragmented domains of life, education, and employment.
