Moving outside the Comfort Zone: An Innovative Approach to Principal Preparation
Israel, Marla S.; Fine, Janis
Planning and Changing, v43 n3-4 p294-308 2012
Today's principal requires a deep understanding of curriculum and instruction, teaching and learning, and intercultural sensitivity to ensure improved student outcomes. To develop this broadened expertise in its principal preparation program, the educational leadership faculty needed to move beyond their comfort zone. In response to Illinois Public Act 096.0903 (2010) the faculty at Loyola University Chicago has reconceptualized its Principal Preparation program. This article will describe: (a) the collaborative construction with cross-disciplinary colleagues to create a principal knowledge-base focusing on improved student outcomes; (b) a three-year intensive coaching model; and (c) the development of global perspectives through both international and domestic cultural immersion field experiences.
