Planning and Changing, v44 n1-2 p5-20 2013
The authors describe a simulation-based set of full-motion video scenarios which require students studying educational leadership to make decisions that solve problems presented in "A Year in the Life of a Middle School Principal." The decision points were designed to reflect the proficiencies emphasized in ISLLC [Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium] standards: leadership, supervision, professional development student performance assessment, budgeting, and business, planning, safety, communications and community relations, and professionalism. Student responses to the scenarios, responses of scholars, and responses of sitting principals are compared and analyzed. After feedback from principal-participants, next steps in refining the simulation include adding additional scenarios and decision points, adding new media, undertaking an additional validation study, and "branching" the sequences so the consequences of decisions make less than optimal decisions more immediately apparent.
