Targeted School Violence and the Web of Causes: Risk Factors and the Problems of Specificity. Commentary on: "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review"
Böckler, Nils; Roth, Viktoria; Stetten, Lina; Zick, Andreas
International Journal of Developmental Science, v8 n1-2 p49-51 2014
The authors begin their commentary by saying that looking at the phenotypical characteristics of a school shooting, which focus on the perpetrators' experiences in school contexts seems to be overdue. In spite of methodological problems, the studies involved in the review seem to paint a clear picture with regard to social ostracism and harassment experienced by perpetrators. In this article, the authors present their opinion and offer commentary. The authors discuss the role of social dynamics in the development of school shootings and state that the mere accumulation of empirical observations is not enough. A theoretical point of reference which provides some guidance for interpretation and which allows for making an important turn from description to explanation is needed. [This commentary relates to "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review" (EJ1144253).]
