Building a Systematic Data Base for the Future. Commentary on: "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review"
Smith, Peter K.
International Journal of Developmental Science, v8 n1-2 p53-55 2014
In this commentary, Peter Smith questions how well we follow up after school shootings in order to diagnose causes and enhance future prevention. Sommer, Leuschner, and Scheithauer (2014) have assembled data from 126 cases available in the English and German research literature and suggested important risk categories. Notably, there are a large number of "no information" entries for the majority of their categories. It would appear that in most if not all cases, a poor job is being done of gathering relevant evidence in an effective way. In this commentary, Smith suggests that systematic efforts should be made to gather such information, and makes some suggestions for extending their category list for the kinds of information that it would be valuable to obtain.
