Who Are We Talking About? A Discussion of Peter Molenaar's Interpretation of Gottlieb's Legacy. Commentary on: "An Interpretation of Part of Gilbert Gottlieb's Legacy: Developmental Systems Theory Contra Developmental Behavior Genetics"
von Eye, Alexander
International Journal of Developmental Science, v9 n1 p19-22 2015
The concepts and paradigms "development", "evolution", and "developmental behavior genetics" target, in their statements, populations. The laws of genetics and evolution are supposed to apply to every single case in a population. It can be counted among the major contributions of Gottlieb (1992, 1995) to have pointed to the role played by individuals in such processes. There is more than population statistics when it comes to explaining evolution. In this commentary, von Eye expands on the discussion of the role that individuals play in evolution (cf. Molenaar, 2015). He asks: (1) whether there is enough leeway for individuals to differ in more fundamental ways than can be expressed by differences in units of scales that apply to everybody; and (2) whether the person-oriented and idiographic approaches can contribute to the explanation of evolution. [This commentary relates to Peter Molenaar's "An Interpretation of Part of Gilbert Gottlieb's Legacy: Developmental Systems Theory Contra Developmental Behavior Genetics" (EJ1144157).]
