Understanding Social Dynamics and School Shootings Requires Larger Context. Commentary on: "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review"
Klein, Jessie
International Journal of Developmental Science, v8 n1-2, p43-47 2014
Jessie Klein begins her commentary on "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review" (Sommer, Leuschner, and Scheithauer," International Journal of Developmental Science" v 8, n1-2, p3-24, 2014) by saying that to understand the causes of school shootings requires more nuance than is present in the systematic review by Sommer, Leuschner, and Scheithauer. Klein maintains that the comprehensive effort in the article to better understand the role of the perpetrators' relationships in their schools and to obtain precise information on the shooter's perception of him or herself as a possible victim, are necessary. Klein however argues that the paper misses the following points: (1) the low reliability of others' perceptions of a different individual's sense of self in a community; (2) the role of masculinity pressures which often cause men to experience rejection not just as an emotional loss and personal failure, but as a challenge to their manhood; (3) the impact of perceived academic failure; and (4) the implication of the increasing number of females committing school shootings, albeit small when compared to those committed by males. Here she address each of those concerns in depth.
