Future Directions for Research on School Shootings: Commentary on: "Bullying, Romantic Rejection, and Conflicts with Teachers: The Crucial Role of Social Dynamics in the Development of School Shootings--A Systematic Review"
Cornell, Dewey
International Journal of Developmental Science, v8 n1-2 p29-31 2014
Sommer, Leuschner, and Scheithauer ("International Journal of Developmental Science," v8, n1-2, p 3-24, 2014.) make an excellent contribution to the field in bringing attention to the social dynamics that underlie many homicidal attacks that have occurred in schools. By drawing on 126 cases reported in 35 studies, the authors are able to broaden our understanding of the diverse conflicts and problems that motivate a violent attack. They bring new attention to the role of conflicts with teachers in addition to the well-recognized problems of bullying and peer rejection. Their analyses should be helpful to threat assessment teams and others who assess potentially dangerous situations. The authors took a number of steps to safeguard the reliability and integrity of their judgments and followed careful decision rules for evaluating studies. They acknowledge that some problems cannot be overcome and must be addressed in additional studies using different methods. The purpose of this commentary is to suggest how further progress might be made.
