Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: Love It or Hate It, Understand Those Who Don't
Wagner, Patty Anne
The Mathematics Educator, v25 spec iss p95-107 2016
In this commentary, Wagner points out that the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) has fueled strong reactions on either end of the spectrum, compelling its supporters and critics to argue their positions. Naturally neither side have interest in entertaining the arguments of the other. Wagner claims, however, that you develop the strongest case for your position if you clearly understand the opposition's point of view. To understand the opposition's point of view you must, at least briefly, adopt their position and seek to empathetically interpret it. Additionally, this deep understanding positions you to predict the reactions of oppositional members to subsequent policies or ideas, as well as ways in which those reactions may be contained or avoided. Wagner highlights from experience that to become an effective advocate for your position, whether that be as a critic or supporter, an understanding of the viewpoints and fundamental motivations of the opposite side is beneficial.
