Music Education in the Curriculum of Ohio Charter Schools
Hedgecoth, David M.
Contributions to Music Education, v42 p73-88 2017
The purpose of the current investigation is to examine the extent to which music education is present in the curriculum of Ohio charter schools. These community schools, as they are identified within the state, enroll over 120,000 students across Ohio. While the mission and focus of these schools are easily found in promotional literature and school websites, what is not entirely clear are the elective courses these schools offer. This investigation centered on the following research questions: What types of music courses are offered in these schools? Who provides instruction? Are there innovative methods of music instruction in charter schools? What supports are in place to enable a successful program? What challenges prevent some schools from offering music instruction? An online survey instrument was sent to 301 principals of Ohio charter schools. A 31% response rate was achieved, consistent with previous investigations on charter schools. Data collected suggest that charter schools do not consistently offer music education in their daily curriculum. Schools that do offer music education most often employ a licensed music teacher on part-time status. Additionally, schools provide little fiscal or logistical support to music programs with financial constraints, school mission, and lack of student interest being listed as reasons schools do not have music in the curriculum.
