Jack Wescott and Donald F. Smith. The Legacy Project
Moye, Johnny J.; Wescott, Jack W.; Smith, Donald F.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v76 n7 p30-34 Apr 2017
This is the tenth in a series of articles entitled "The Legacy Project." The Legacy Project focuses on the lives and actions of leaders who have forged our profession into what it is today. Members of the profession owe a debt of gratitude to these leaders. One simple way to demonstrate that gratitude is to recognize these leaders and some of their accomplishments. The focus in this issue will be on Jack Wescott and Don Smith from Ball State University. This article offers an interview with Wescott and Smith and covers the national reputation Ball State University has had for producing industrial arts and later technology education teachers. Both men have served a number of years in the College of Applied Sciences and Technology and describe the characteristics of the type of educator they desired to prepare through their undergraduate program. While this department was noted for producing strong teachers, administrators, and teacher educators the characteristics that were desirable for the undergraduate program included: technical skills, the act of teaching, self-learning, and interest in students. The long-term success of the teacher education program can be traced directly to the faculty, and this article provides a brief description of the expertise.
