Designing a Community of Shared Learning
Beaton, Anne M.
Educational Leadership, v74 n8 p78-82 May 2017
Once instructional coach Anne Beaton began creating chances for teachers to get into one another's classrooms to observe and learn about different teaching styles, she realized that not only is studying one another's teaching practices as a community essential in serving students, it also lifts teachers up as leaders. Beaton knew she was learning much "craft knowledge" from being in many different classrooms. She created a system for any teacher in her high school to briefly observe in one (or several) colleagues' classrooms, not to evaluate, but to study and learn from the learning environment that teacher created. Beaton describes how she set up "Teachers in Classrooms Getting Connected," including the norms, materials to spark reflection, and debriefing she devised for these teacher visits. After four years, 75 percent of faculty at her school have successfully participated. Teachers are using what they glean from colleagues to enhance their practice and are becoming confident at leading colleagues just by good example.
