Leadership Coaching That Transforms
Aguilar, Elena
Educational Leadership, v74 n8 p32-36 May 2017
Leading a school can be a lonely, challenging job, Elena Aguilar has found in her years coaching principals. Aguilar describes how coaching approach she's developed--transformational coaching--helps principals get three things most of them need: a neutral person they can talk with confidentially, job-embedded professional development, and a safe space to explore identity questions that often surface when leading a school (especially for leaders of color). Using an extended example of a principal at an urban high school she worked with, Aguilar shows how an effective coach helps a leader grow by exploring the "three B's"--behavior, beliefs, and ways of being (the leader's identity, way of communicating, and emotions). The article also identifies key issues districts hoping to launch a leadership coaching program need to consider upfront and conditions that help instructional coaches do their best, such as protecting time for coach and principal to have extended, uninterrupted conversations.
