Student Perceptions of Online Practicum: A Case Study
Wilcox, Gabrielle; Lock, Jennifer
International Journal on E-Learning, v16 n2 p195-208 Apr 2017
The purpose of the study was to investigate practicum students' perceptions of their experience with an online practicum course in an Applied School Psychology graduate program. With the use of synchronous and asynchronous communication technology, the instructor and students met in the online environment to engage in discussion with regard to topics and issues related to the practicum experience. Using a case study methodology, data were collected through the use of individual interviews with students and the instructor, along with students completing a perception survey. The following four recommendations for practice in using online environments for practicum were identified as a result of the study: 1) establish an online presence through the use of various activities and tools; 2) encourage a mind-shift in an online practicum to support greater engagement in learning; 3) support problem-solving within technology-enabled learning environments; and 4) support the openness and flexibility required to adapt to the constantly changing nature of technology.
