Regular education teachers and special educators shouldn't view their jobs as mutually exclusive, writes Jeffrey Benson in this article. He argues that all students benefit when both teachers form collaborative partnerships. Drawing on his four decades of experience in schools, Benson details how regular education teachers can incorporate ideas from their special education partners by acknowledging what special educators have long wished everyone know about their work, including the following: children grow in unpredictable ways, inclusion isn't a panacea, it's better to create success than fix failure, and all teachers should share the joys and responsibilities of all students.
