Cultivating Equity and Access: Focus on Men in Dance
McGreevy-Nichols, Susan; Dooling-Cain, Shannon
Journal of Dance Education, v17 n2 p86-87 2017
This year, the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) is taking a special look at the questions of equity and access in the field of dance education. The Decade of Dance Education (2015-2025), NDEO's ten-year campaign designed to raise the profile of dance education in the arts, provides a unique opportunity to examine their commitment to their vision statement and the related questions of equity and access. One way they address member needs is through Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which facilitate discussion among members with shared educational interests via online forums and discussion groups at national conferences. This brief article describes the Men in Dance SIG, a SIG created to address questions related to teaching boys and supporting men in the field of dance education. It also describes the "Men in Dance: Bridging the Gap" event, the first of its kind to focus on issues affecting boys and men in dance and dance education.
