PE in Pictures: Using Photovoice to Promote Middle School Students' Reflections on Physical Activity during Free Time
Treadwell, Sheri M.; Taylor, Neva
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v88 n4 p26-33 2017
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how physical educators can use Photovoice to examine their students' perceptions of physical activity and healthy living, and ultimately advocate for change in both their school and community. As a result of student participation in a physical education class project that utilized Photovoice, seventh-grade students made a presentation to their local school board regarding their perceived barriers to physical activity in their community. Throughout the process students gained a sense of pride as well as empowerment by having their voices heard by those responsible for developing school policy, while their physical education teacher gained valuable insight into the kinds of activities her students found meaningful. Using Photovoice in this way in physical education could serve as an impetus for teachers to design physical education programs that students find meaningful, as well as motivate them to participate in physical activity throughout the lifespan.
