Applying Disciplinary Literacy in Elementary Geography
Britt, Judy; Ming, Kavin
Geography Teacher, v14 n2 p68-76 2017
In this article, a social studies teacher and a literacy teacher describe a vision for social studies that highlights reading practices that foster disciplinary literacy in elementary geography. Their purpose is to share a practical approach for enriching elementary social studies lessons and activities with a geographic lens. During the development of this work, two goals merged in their focus on disciplinary literacy and geography: (1) The use of national standards to identify disciplinary literacy in geography and the development of ideas to apply disciplinary literacy with common reading strategies found in elementary classrooms; and (2) The utilization of the work of geography educators to describe disciplinary literacy as a geographic lens for teaching spatial information in elementary social studies.
