Identity Bargaining and Self-Conception
Blumstein, Philip W.
Social Forces, 53, 3, 476-484, Mar 75
A role playing experiment was designed in which an identity bargaining encounter was created in the laboratory by formally posing the self-consistency vs. self-presentation dilemma. Male subjects interacted with female stooges who demanded that they assume a certain identity in order to accomplish a desirable goal. As predicted subjects engaged in greater ceding of identity when the stooges altercast was not aimed at a central feature of their self-conception. (Author/EH)
