The Coach's Learning Community: Standards-Based Program Develops School Wide Capacity
Reitz, Diane; Hall, Gene E.
Learning Professional, v38 n1 p58-62, 64 Feb 2017
Challenges inherent to increasing student literacy are well-documented particularly in under performing schools. Those challenges increase in schools experiencing high staff turnover, high populations of English language learners, and greater poverty. In order to improve student learning in these communities there needs to be a comprehensive approach that includes stragegies to facilitate teacher learning, school wide implementation of effective literary strategies and an investment in ongoing internal resources and supports. This article describes the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Program. Through a federal literacy grant, this program aims to improve literacy achievement in pre-K-12 classrooms by implementing full time school-based literacy coaches. The coaches are assigned to the most struggling elementary, middle, and high schools in order to assist in improving literacy instruction, and ultimately student achievement. How the program works, topics and resources for professional resources, tools and outcomes, stages of concern, implementation and progress are all discussed.
