Share (And Not) Share Alike: Improving Virtual Team Climate and Decision Performance
Cordes, Sean
Journal of Interactive Learning Research, v28 n1 p29-48 Jan 2017
Virtual teams face unique communication and collaboration challenges that impact climate development and performance. First, virtual teams rely on technology mediated communication which can constrain communication. Second, team members lack skill for adapting process to the virtual setting. A collaboration process structure was designed to improve team climate and decision performance learning. The intervention test was performed only using 2 x 2 factorial design of action process structure and communication technology affordance. All teams used chat communication, and some teams had greater communication affordance with ability to view and structure information using a shared document. Action process teams had greater team climate perceptions and decision quality than ad hoc process teams. This effect was greater when teams also had increase communication capability. The intervention method shows ability to enhancing team performance, especially in training virtual teams where members may have limited online collaboration experience.
