Enriching Later Life through Higher Education: Profiting from International Experience
Ring, Chris; De Motte, Claire
Higher Education Review, v48 n3 p51-74 2016
Developed countries differ greatly in their policy response to population ageing. In the United Kingdom, little attention is given to its positive features, and the potential of lifelong learning to enhance the wellbeing of older populations is largely disregarded. Universities have increasingly neglected them, while expanding provision for much younger students in an increasingly marketised system. In Spain, however, social policy emphasises "active ageing", and higher education specifically designed for older people is widely available and of demonstrable benefit. The implication that British universities have significant potential to do likewise is supported by a survey in Nottingham which suggests a demand for this exists in England. A proposed university course for older people is outlined, and the challenges of replicating best practice from abroad are discussed.
