Contreras-Aguirre, Hilda Cecilia; Gonzalez Y Gonzalez, Elsa
College Student Journal, v51 n1 p33-46 Spr 2017
International students enrolled in American institutions of higher education have been increasing during the past decades. The current study addresses the experiences of international female graduate students in the United States, in terms of difficulties as students at a southern American university and temporal residents of the United States. Using qualitative detail interviews conducted with six participants, their answers indicated a deep knowledge of themselves by expressing constant constraints; however, they continue to develop strategies to surpass those challenges. The findings suggest any feeling of being discriminated against their gender, being foreign and new in the host country limited their acceptance with the American people. The adaptation process plays an important role by building new relationships and meeting academic and socio cultural requirements, which enrich their educational and personal learning, and will help them in future endeavors.
